I had an opportunity to go on this thing called the Phoenix Program. It’s a YMCA camp (Camp Collins) where you can figure out what and who you are, and it was the first chance I’ve ever had to be open. I realized I wasn’t crazy and I wasn’t the only one who was hurting.

My family joined the YMCA summer program in 2006 and I am so glad we did. I started the 90 Day program. It was very hard to get started, and many of the exercises were very difficult due to a prior shoulder injury.
My goal was to lose ten pounds in the 90 Days and although the weight came off a little slower than I wanted, I did lose 15 pounds overall and increased my cardio workouts from 15 minutes to 60 minutes! Best of all, I increased my upper body strength considerably and went from not being able to do the Rotary Shoulder with even 10 pounds on it to doing multiple sets with 120 pounds!
I can honestly say that I have not been in this good of shape since I was in my early 20’s. As a retired person, I believe that joining the YMCA has been the best thing I have done for myself.

As an immigrant in the United States, we needed assistance to support our family of nine. We joined the Y and participated in a program. The Y urgently responded to our situation by assisting us with food, clothing and also trying to find a home. The result of the Y program made us feel very happy and very safe. The Y has provided a great change for our family. We no longer feel rejected and oppressed as we were in our country.
