Campaign Highlights
The 2012 Strong Communities Campaign is in full swing. This year we are celebrating the past and looking into the future of our organization by highlighting all of the YMCA innovations over the years. Just to name a few, did you know?
- • 1892: YMCA invented basketball
- • 1895: William G Morgan of the Holyoke YMCA invents volleyball
- • 1895: The first professional football game was played with funding from a PA YMCA
- • 1907: World’s first mass swim lessons begin at the Detroit YMCA
- • 1910: Father’s Day is founded by the Spokane YMCA
- • 1926: Colorado YMCA invented the name “softball” for a game formally known as “kittenball”
- • 1950: Joe Sobek invented Racquetball through the YMCA
Our campaigners dressed up in clothing from past decades to rally together and Kickoff their volunteer efforts for 2012. We are on our way to reach our goal of $634,500!
