Requirements: 

· Minimum age 21.
· CPR and First Aid Certification or ability to obtain prior to 1st day of employment.
· Requires strong communication skills, positive attitude, initiative, flexibility, dependability, creativity and ability to work and problem solve as a team player.
· Must possess maturity, understanding, patience and commitment to serve youth.
· Mental and physical ability to deal with high stress situations and work well under pressure.
· Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently.
· Ability to support and connect with campers and staff.
· Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical abilities to act swiftly in an emergency situation.
· Ability and willingness to learn on the job in an environment that changes quickly.
· Prefer valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
· Prefer RN and license to practice in Oregon, LNP, EMT or WEMT.
· Prefer 1 year organized camp, school or public health experience.

Job Description: 

General Function
Work with the Summer Program Director to help maintain a safe and healthy camp environment using preventive care and risk management techniques. Respond to medical needs of campers and staff. Work closely with volunteer RNs that may change weekly. Be an active and supportive member of the camp community and help to create an enjoyable experience for all campers and staff. The Health Officer must demonstrate positive, professional role modeling at all times, acting in a manner that is consistent with the staff code of conduct and the philosophy, goals, and objectives of YMCA Camp Collins.

Essential Functions of Job

  1. 1. Incorporate and Model our YMCA Christian principles of love, respect, honesty, responsibility and service into your work.
  2. 2. Commit to establishing long-term relationships with staff, volunteers, campers and families.
  3. 3. Care for Campers/Staff who are Ill or Injured at Camp
    1. a. Provide appropriate care based on training and qualifications.
    2. b. Review health histories, dispense personal medication, and provide first aid and medical care to all campers and staff in accordance with camp medical protocols.
    3. c. Use parents as resources to give you insight into their child’s behavior and how to help them.
      1. i. Keep the Summer Program Director informed of the situation. Notify Summer Program Director first when parents should be advised of serious illness or accident.
      2. ii. Establish contact with parents in a timely manner.
    4. d. Report any suspicions of child abuse immediately to the Summer Program Director.
      1. i. With the Summer Program Director’s assistance, call the Metro Tri County Hotline.
      2. ii. Document the situation and complete an incident report form.
    5. e. Be aware of times or activities that may involve a high degree of emotional or social risk for campers and work with staff to mitigate these risks.
    6. f. Handle all situations involving camper safety in a timely manner.
    7. g. Make arrangements with members of Leadership Team for transportation to and from off-site medical care facilities.
    8. h. Talk to the Summer Program Director when you have serious concerns about the behavior of a particular camper.
  4. 4. Support Staff
    1. a. Discuss health, safety and risk management procedures, precautions and routines with staff during training and on an ongoing basis.
    2. b. Intentionally work to build positive relationships with staff members during training and throughout the summer.
    3. c. Guide counselors in noting and reporting illness, injury or unsafe practices/conditions that contribute to accidents and in reporting unusual camper dietary habits.
    4. d. Work with all staff to create an environment in which all campers are respectful of each other and the guidelines at camp.
    5. e. Encourage proper hand washing, clothing, nutrition and rest for campers and staff.
    6. f. Be supportive when counselors deal with challenging situations.
      1. i. Encourage staff to ask for help when needed and give it willingly when asked.
      2. ii. Listen and demonstrate understanding.
    7. g. Follow-through with staff requests and commitments that you make.
    8. h. Help staff replace undesired behavior with positive choices.
      1. i. Identify and point out incorrect choices in a timely manner.
      2. ii. Work with staff members to make better choices in similar situations.
    9. i. Help staff grow as people and as counselors.
  5. 5. Health House Operations
    1. a. Maintain health log, accident and incident reports.
    2. b. Maintain and re-supply first aid kits in buildings and program areas weekly. Prepare first aid kits for use on hikes, trips, and overnights.
    3. c. Ensure copies of Health History and Medical Administration Records are given to counselors leading out of camp trips.
    4. d. Monitor, organize and reorder medical supplies.
    5. e. Follow guidelines for the Health House; keep it clean and in good order. Report any sanitation concerns to Summer Program Director’s attention.
