Why I Work at the Y

Read how working at the Y isn't just a job for Karen:

I was a grad student in the early 2000’s that wanted to stay healthy and exercise but could barely afford tuition, rent and gas. The Mission Viejo YMCA in Southern California gave me financial assistance on top of the student rates so I could have a place to work-out while I was in school. Funny … since I usually had my late mornings free, I typically ended up taking the silver sneakers group classes when I wanted to do a class! Lots of fun.

By Roger Button, Chaplain, Clark County Family YMCA

Christmas is always a very busy time of year for a chaplain. One of the many things that I do is play Santa Clause. The other day I was at P.I.C. (Partners in Careers). Partners in Careers is a non-profit whose mission is to eliminate generational poverty.

This school year, I found myself helping out daily at a site that had a lot of special-needs and high-energy children. After two long months of getting the kids into a routine, setting up boundaries and working with parents on our schedule and rules, we decided to have a meeting with the parents and staff to check in on how the year was shaping up.
